Notwithstanding a gremlin or two at work in the early moments of Dawn Song and Radical Action, Crimson’s second night in Berlin feels like it gets properly underway with a boisterously swinging Pictures Of A City that includes a scorching solo from Mel Collins. Collins has recalled that in the aftermath of the Islands-era band falling apart, Robert Fripp sounded him out about joining what eventually became the Larks’ Tongues incarnation. For Collins, things were still a bit too raw, and he declined. Over forty years later, however, his presence in the group means we can hear how things might well have worked out had he joined the team back in the winter of 1972, when the band played music from the LTIA album. Fans of symmetry will note that as the sax solo gets underway, it fleetingly mirrors the shrill screeching that ushers in the LTIA Pt2, sampled from the original multitracks and triggered by Pat Mastelotto.
