Reviews for Grateful Dead: 3/25/1985 Springfield Civic Center, Springfield, MA

These recent 1985 releases have converted me. It wouldn’t have been in my top 3 before even in years in the 1980’s. Now it is possibly in my top 3 favorite years, ever from 60s to ‘95. These shows have energy about them, they sound loose and locked in at the same time. There are some absolutely killer riffs from Jerry. Not just the solos. Everyone else is there for it, sounding like a pro-backing band they has played with him for 20+ years. There is an element of rock to these that make 1985 into its own unique band, Like Derek and the Dominoes, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, The Beatles, etc. I wish they had stuck with this more rocking sound and went away from the experimental and 80s synth stuff. To a musician this sounds like some really good players having fun playing good music

Another absolute gem holding down the fort for ‘85 enthusiasts! Great period for mind searing Bird songs and blistering Let It Grows. I put this LIG next to Cincinnati for best of tour. Help>Slip>Franklin’s sparkles out the gate in the second set and away we go! “Climb aboard!” they were shouting nearing every night during this infectious run. What will they do next?!?

4:50-5:00 might be my favorite 10 seconds of any Sugaree.

Been on tour in 85 with the Play Dead releases and this one smokes— well played, well sung and totally enjoyable. I’m a bit surprised this one had not previously been released.

Boy howdy, Ol' Jer came to this one ready to shred! He tears up Sugaree, Bird Song, and just about everything else. Beautiful China Doll. Even Day Job is tolerable here. Outstanding. ****

It’s a great set list, Weir’s guitar is well placed in the mix, and his tone is terrific, crunchy! Jerry is in GREAT form on guitar, he really gives us a Sugaree solo that’s pure ??, and after the strong jackstraw opener, you know it’s gonna be a great show! Bird Sing has legs and travels, and the second set is also deliriously wonderful! I highly recommend this show!

One of the most potent first sets of Dead for your head.Absolutely locked in and loaded for Grizzly.Garcia and Weir stunningly seamless.Phil and Rythym devils playing for their lives with Brent icing it all.Refreshingly new takes on well worn material.Second set continues the shelling.Amazing how 85 stays below the radar as we all watch the decline of our hero. But NOT this night my friends.Massive !
