What a show! It was my 30th birthday and I couldn’t have dreamt of a better way to spend it than at a hometown show. I was right behind the guy who threw the beer. I’m pretty sure it happened during “IATTBYH.” As Jeff was finishing up the vocals in the song, he reached out into the audience to point out the culprit to security. They quickly ushered him out.
It was great seeing Lilac join in on “Hummingbird” again. The first time I saw her join the guys was in Raleigh in 2005. Back then, I swear she was a shy toddler but by this night, she was a confident young lady! Their duets have always been a highlight of local Wilco shows.
Another highlight were the fireworks that occurred during “Jesus, etc.” The state fair was happening at the time and we were treated to Wilco and fireworks ??
Before the show, I had requested “Cars Can’t Escape” on Wilco’s website and to my surprise, they played it!
But possibly, my favorite moment, was standing onstage for “Impossible Germany.” The only place I could stand, that wasn’t occupied by others, was in front of an 8 ft. speaker. In retrospect, this wasn’t the best idea I’ve ever had. It felt like my left eardrum had been attacked by X-Wings and Tie Fighters on the Death Star. But it was totally worth it!
