Madison Square Garden, New York — 9/16/88
Night three. The one tape traders point to.
Set One earns it — "Hey Pocky Way" funks it up early, "Mississippi Half-Step" soars, "To Lay Me Down" goes delicate and quiet, then "Bird Song" closes the half at twelve minutes and takes its time getting there.
Set Two is the masterclass. "China > Rider" opens massive, "Estimated > Terrapin" goes deep and psychedelic, then Brent emerges from Space and owns the room — "Dear Mr. Fantasy > Hey Jude" is the moment this residency is remembered for. "Sugar Magnolia" blows the roof off. "Baby Blue" brings everyone back to earth.
Nine shows. Night three is the heavyweight.

I’m Bias because I was there. This show is tight the band was clicking and Jerry’s cold hasn’t completely kicked in. Brent and Jerry back and forth all night but so intense in the first set. The drums stand out on this evening as well. For me the highlight of the night is in Dear Mr Fantasy with 1:13 to go And Jerry just strokes the command of the band for the final transition. Listening to this show brought back so many memories. What a fantastic time to be a kid in NYC!

You know the set is a rocker when Jerry has no interest in a post drums ballad!

Might be one of the worst half steps I have ever heard. The best thing I can say is nobody forgets any words.
