I thought the morning dew was powerful. Encore was sweet too

Madison Square Garden, New York — 9/14/88
The Garden. First night of nine. The band already owns the room.
Set One moves fast — "Let the Good Times Roll > Alabama Getaway" out of the gate, no warmup needed. "Let It Grow" closes the half at twelve minutes, coiling and patient before it breaks open.
Set Two does the work. "Box of Rain" up front, then into the dark with "Victim or the Crime" — they play the hard ones and mean it. Space swallows the room whole, and what emerges is "Miracle > Gimme Some Lovin'" straight into a twelve-minute "Morning Dew." That's the tape right there.
Brent era. Gritty Garden energy. Don't sleep on '88.

Fairly strong first set and I thought Jerry’s vocals were sharper than I expected. Ramble on Rose stands out vocally. Second set? Things fall apart. I feel like the drums are clumsy and all the sudden Jerry’s vox are shot. Fun time capsule though as are all these Drops!!! Keep ‘em coming, Dave ??

This is a great example of why I strongly prefer 60's and 70's Dead.

A couple of gems in the second set but otherwise forgettable show . Garcia's voice is shot. It won't be in my steady rotation

Lacking energy not a memorable show. Jerry does not sing well at all and playing lacks intensity and wanders.

Beautiful Black Muddy River and Box of Rain. Great show.

How blessed were/are we that this passes as an enjoyable, if not perfect, show. Comparisons to great vs good aside, holy hell, how about that Morning Dew? Jerry brings the pain in his voice from deep inside and drips tears from his guitar.
