Reviews for Umphrey's McGee: 12/31/2009 Aragon Ballroom, Chicago, IL

I thought, as they always do, that Umphrey's brought the heat for NYE and showed us all a good time. I definitely felt that I got my money's worth between the setlist (though not my favorite ever), sweet covers, and great party atmosphere (my first time to Aragon/Chicago and it was pretty sick). As far as this argument revolving around that idiot Mindless Dribbler, I must say that Disco Biscuits and Umphrey's are both in my top favorite bands, and I would never try to rank the two because there's no way to compare. To say that either Disco Biscuits or Umphrey's isn't talented is retarded. I would argue that Umphrey's has two of the best guitarists out there on the music scene right now, and they basically are a modern-day Rush + Metallica. I also don't believe that any single DB musician is better at what they do than their Umphrey's counterpart (except maybe their drummer Allen). But at the same time Disco Biscuits are probably the best at what they do, which is to drive electronic music with a guitar (Umphrey's does tidbits of this, but it's not what they do best). I think DB are better at pure sponatenous improvisation, and I think Umphrey's is best at pure structural complexity of songs which is why I love them, because they could do musical circles around any pussy-ass mainstream band. So I guess my point being, just because Mind Dribbler is an idiot, this shouldn't lead to a Disco Biscuits bashing session. You simply can't compare the two bands.

The shows on 12/30 and 12/31 were my 3rd and 4th Umphrey's shows. I find it hard to describe just how much I love this band. I'm a 40 year old from South Dakota that was lucky enough to be turned onto endless amounts of killer music as I was growing up in the 70's, 80's, and 90's; although I'm still not exactly grown up. My perspective of Umphrey's is through a musical lense comprised of the Beatles, Zep, Rolling Stones, Steely Dan, Rush, Ramones, the Heads, Television, the Minutemen, R.E.M., Johnny Cash, Police, Neil Young, Chemical Bros, Widespread Panic, Beck, etc...many of which I was able to see live throughout the years; 100's of shows. These two nights of music were absolutely incredible, and after seeing them, there is no doubt in my mind that Umphrey's McGee is the best band in the world today; maybe ever. The best part is, my nephew (1/2 my age) introduced me to Umphrey's as a return favor for all of the music I'd shared with him over the years. I'd say I got the better part of that deal. Let's hope this band keeps loving us as much as we love them. Keep the Steely covers coming!

awesome show, really well played and a lot of fun. i too hate it when a post like mindless dribbler's shows up on here. give me a break man, that's pretty ridiculous. honestly it might be the worst post i've ever seen on any site. what's funny is that umphreys and the biscuits are good friends and jam together all the time. if you write a post like that i don't even consider a real fan of music. go somewhere else.

Umphrey's is ridiculous! If there is another band better then them let me know. They play one song and I'm usually happy with the price I paid for the show. To Mindless Dribbler, two guys with a casio, a drum kit, and a bag could reproduce the biscuits. It would take some musical ability to do what Umphrey's does.

what a joke that someone could be so ignorant to compare umphrey's mcgee to the biscuits...who are not even in the same league musically. the biscuits are not a pimple on the ass of umphrey's. sure they can drop some fun untzy beats...that are particularly good if you're on three hits of molly...but they lack the technical prowess, creativity, originality, diversity and overall talent of umphrey's. do you wonder why someone like jeff coffin, who is in one of the most TALENTED bands in the world, consistently chooses to play with umphrey's again and again? you can have your biscuits...i'll take umphrey's over them (or any band) every time.

Mehhh... On the bottom of my list of shows I've seen, only redeeming quality was venue and that new years crunkness atmosphere. The show could have been way more something didn't want to pay 80 bucks to hear Stasik try and sing

Hey Mindless Dribbler, you are a fucking moron. I´m guessing that you are not a musician, because you obviously don´t know what you´re talking about. I wasn´t at the NYE shows so I don´t know how the performance was on that particular occasion. But I have seen Umphrey´s at their best (especially the last 2 halloweens) and I can tell you that these guys are nothing less than amazing. So please keep your mindless dribble to your own self and find some respect in your life. Your projection of perspective reflects your own consciousness, so maybe it is not Umphrey´s that is sad and pathetic, but your own personal outlook on life. Look in the mirror fellow human of Earth, for what you see in the in the world is a reflection of your inner self. Umphrey´s is incredible, as we all are deep within our souls. Maybe you´ve got some journeying to do my friend, for you will find a reality of beauty if you merely open your heart and mind. Or you can stop wasting your time and money to attend Umphrey´s concerts and signing up for the download sight of this band that you so much despise just to express your inner filth to gain strength within your own egoic, mindless and dribbling self. We lovers of true music have better things to read on our favorite band´s sight. Cheers Umphrey´s!!! Come back to California for Halloween please :) and keep kicking ass!!!

2010 started with Hurt Bird Bath. Going to be a great year for UM. Less Mantis, more exploratory improv, and it's no longer an album year (sets will open up more, especially at festivals). Overall, really good show I really enjoyed. Had an awesome time. Headphones & Snocones was awesome, keep the bustouts comin. Thought we were possibly going to be getting another one in In Violation of Yes when Stasik handed Jake the bass, but I felt somewhat better watching Stasik sing on his knees. Shit was too funny.
