Reviews for Spafford: 3/20/2024 The Broadberry, Richmond, VA

Highlights include Broken Wing, a top-tier Windmill, and best-of-24 LTLO (IMO).  Broken Wing (1A and 1B with Giants in terms of jam reliability, IMO) gets after it right out of the gate.  A multi-faceted, pulsating jam leads to a dark and brooding jam for a brief moment before Brian leads us to the promised land. This second set is something else, (wo)man.  Windmill features a second jam after the typical close.  The evolution of this jam is perfectly executed.  It hits a number of different themes while never feeling like any one of them is rushed.  My favorite part of Windmill, though, was the jam before "Empty nights, chaotic days".  A patient and tender jam that highlights Cory as a pianist.  The more I've listened to Cory, especially in the last 6 months, the more I've appreciated his playing as a pianist.  The fun synth sounds (rightfully) garner him respect and adoration, but he is an incredible piano player.  This initial jam segment ends in a gorgeous Brian-bliss peak.  LTLO was the most interesting (to me) version of 2024.  I really enjoyed the first part of the jam where, again, Cory shines on the piano.  The other thing to note here is Jordan's playing.  He has been playing out of his mind lately (during and now after Spaffski).  He is making his own music within the conversation while still supporting others and furthering the jam.  What a joy it is to re-discover this band on a nightly basis.

Don’t miss the primordial funk jams in Broken Wing > Backdoor funk, the first 2/3rds of Soil, and the second half of Leave the light On.

Only my 5th time seeing these guys but always impressed by their volume levels on stage, not blasting everyone out of the room. Everyone listens to each other and stays in the groove so well. Great musicianship

How are these guys so good, night after night? Unreal.

They had everyone going as soon as the funk loop siren went off on Broken Wing. Then it was just a big old dance party!!!
