I had a craving for this Plans (an absolute all timer - if you haven't listened to it, stop what you're doing right now and listen), so I threw the whole show on to pay some respect. Plus I miss People. A lot. Anyways...Turns out Diesel Driver had quite the first appearance.
DD out of the gate hot with Red leading the way. When Red steps back, Jordan pushes, and Brian steps up. A key shift just befoer the 11 minute mark, which leads to some blissy interplay between the aforementioned 3, with Nick pushing the build in the background. Leads to some brief dissonance before setting up for the drop into People. A gorgeous and foreboding introduction to what would become a pillar jam vehicle for the band.
And on the top-tier Plans...starts out in a standard fashion. Funky, brooding. Well that funk and brood grows until Nick ups the tempo and Red - but especially Jordan - start pushing beyond the bounds of your typical Plans build. For the time being, Brian is content playing rythm and letting the jam breath. Pay attention to Jordan here, I believe it's he who lays the groundwork for the overwhelmingly energetic peak. Brian's rhythm evolves and you can hear him setting himself up for the peak, quietly in the background. Nick gassing them up now while Red continues his melody. Brian switches to his (wah?) pedal briefly before Red backs off his melody - it's at this point that Nick builds and the HOSE is turned on full blast. Brian (in the best way possible) assaults the room with his repeated chords before switching to a full-on, rock-star solo. Energy through the roof. Jordan laying down his own notes in the background.
