Reviews for The Disco Biscuits: 9/20/2017 Irving Plaza, New York, NY

Show is average. First set is one of those sets where the band rarely grabs hold of any theme and drives it home. The jam into Pilin It Higher was good though. Second set is marginally better but I’d give this show a 3/5 rating

Sometimes Jon Gutwillig's guitar playing just confounds me. In the old days he was always super precise, nowadays you never know what you might get. So yeah this show is loaded with wrong notes, solos going in and out of the tune and that weird thick note sound he seems to have been working on for years. Of course there is other shows from this year where he absolutely shreds so I will continue to give him the benefit of doubt. This the first of the four night City Bisco run is loaded with interesting moments, especially a great version of "Pilin' It Higher", and some wild fusion style solos from keyboardist Aron Magner, but overall it sounds like they just don't play together enough to be as consistent as I want them to be.
