Maybe I'm just high, but Billy's drums sound especially crisp in this recording.

A rather heady end to such a sweet first set with that far out Playing In the Band sans Donna's usual caterwauling to end the song. But the supposedly "absent" Donna's harmony vocals sound lovely on Row Jimmy. Was she only on stage the first few songs & then split? A splendid 2nd set with sublime energy all around. Keith sounds like he's having all kinds of fun riding the Rhodes. Jerry's lil' U.S. Blues jam sure is sweet.

A delightful "minor" show from the long hot summer of 1974. This southern Virginia show skips the heavy jamming almost entirely - a set-ending PITB is as close as it gets - and instead we get a weird but fun show: Donna ducks out early with some kind of food poisoning (she leaves after Row Jimmy), and Keith confines himself to Fender Rhodes, which gives the songs a new flavor. A fun surprise!

This was my fifth show, and it is a unique and underappreciated outlier. There’s no monster jam for a 1974, and Gary Lambert has called this the most random Grateful Dead show ever. Keith played a Fender Rhodes electric piano that night but was back on grand piano two nights later at the Capital Centre. The U.S. Blues-> “Jerry Won’t Stop Jam”-> Promised Land is a one-of-a-kind joy to hear. Enjoy!
