Shoreline Amphitheatre — 8/16/91 Opening night of a three-show Shoreline run, and the boys torched the playbook. A rare mid-set "Dark Star" lands out of nowhere and slams into "Promised Land" to close Set One — a stunner. Set Two dives straight into the deep end: a dark, psychedelic "Scarlet > Victim > Fire" with Bruce Hornsby leaning hard on the piano, then a heavy "Standing on the Moon" out of Space grounds the back half. Unpredictable. Powerhouse. Peak '91.

I wasn't cool enough in high school to be into The Dead, but some friends were, and I'm sure on their 3 week run once summer break hit, they were at this show. I feel a connection. They sound great. And Bruce Hornsby!? What a treat.

I’ve generally avoided post-Brent shows, but this one has me reconsidering. Such a gorgeous “Standing on the Moon.”

What an absolutely amazing PITB coming out of Space. I had to go back and listen again once it was over. There is so much space for everyone to contribute. This is one of those shows you have to hear.

The first set is magic. All of the tunes through Desolation Row are played w/ touch and energy. Of course the Dark Star is magnificent. The gooey space before they break into is fantastic. The recording is CRISPY. LOVING PLAY DEAD!!!
