I knew it was going to stir it up with that comment. I do stir it up sometimes. Truth be told, I’ve been chasing the Jerry dragon for a very long time. I remember going up to Griffith Park in LA in August ‘95 and just crying my eyes out with all the other heads who were waiting for Fall tour to start and were just stunned. As Robert Hunter wrote that very week:
If some part of that music
is heard in deepest dream,
or on some breeze of Summer
a snatch of golden theme,
we’ll know you live inside us
with love that never parts
our good old Jack O’Diamonds
become the King of Hearts.
And what I *actually* mean to say, having pulled my tongue out of my cheek, is that I respect John Mayer’s attempt to mine that deepest dream. This is the first time I’ve really truly heard that golden theme since 1995.
When I was deep into the 6-2-95 He’s Gone up on the lawn that night, “Nothing’s going to bring him back” kept echoing in my head. A prophecy that seemed fulfilled that August. But in true Dead spirit, it’s a double entendre. Nothing did bring him back. He was brought back from nothing for a few glorious moments on a breeze of Summer, somewhere on a back porch in San Francisco on 6-14-2022. You know our love will not fade away.

Someone threw the 'Jerry who?' grenade in here and I wanted to bring a balanced perspective on where we've been and where we are now.
We live in a 'What have you done for me lately?' culture and obviously Jerry hasn't been actively contributing for a long while. He did, however, co-write most of the iconic music that this group is stewarding today. Jerry also sacrificed greatly in order to craft a cultural force with enough sticking power to support the scale of what we all take for granted now. GD music could have easily faded into oblivion without that fundamental contribution. It's the gift that keeps on giving for those of us who receive such profound spiritual nourishment from these songs.
I also understand the heart of what the commenter was getting at. This music is alive, well and growing. This band is delivering what we've all been longing for. A present moment that is more than just an echo of what was. I was just at a PLF show the other night. A beautiful celebration of the music, yes... But a wellspring of spiritual energy it was not. I really feel the music when I hear D&C play. Thank you, Jerry, wherever you are, for making it possible.

The vocal harmonies on these songs are mind blowing. That Brokedown is so achingly beautiful and John really really stepped up his game on this show. They all did. A very very good show.
