To say that Umphrey`s is not a jam band would be a ridiculous statement. Their first set had 5 songs in it and lasted an hour! As far as jam bands go, I`m not about to go and say they are as good as Phish (whom I love) but they ARE the closest thing I`ve heard since Phish (as far as musical talent goes), and that is saying a lot. Sure they are a little more hard rock heavy than Phish, but so was Phish compared to the Dead. Dead heads will never find anything as good as the Dead, while Phisheads will never find anything as good as Phish......but that preference has a lot to do with what you grow up on. Umphrey`s is a band that I believe will eventually become the next generation`s Phish or Greatful Dead, while bands like Keller Williams and RatDog are throwbacks who appeal to the tastes of previous generations of jammers. Is one better than the other? To some people yes, and some people know. For myself, I just like a good jam, whether it be Jazz, Rock, Bluegrass or Techno, and based on that, I can tell you I would definitely see another UM show.

Hey gds, I hate to break the news to ya buddy , but umphrey`s is gonna be around for awhile. Sorry! NO emotion, no soul. You must be a big Oprah fan! You want them to sing a sad song for ya ? All I know is they have a good time on stage and I always have a good time when I go see them. I tell you what gds, why don`t you send some of us some tickets to your shows so we can see what good music is since you like bashin other peoples music. If your scared of the hard rock just let someone know and maybe they will hold you. Honestly I think THE TRUTH said it best.

I could only stay for the first set. I live in AZ now but grew up with Summer Fest. Used to see them 5 or 6 years back. I really loved what I heard. Please come out west more! They left me wanting more.

No negativity here.... about the music at least. i really never claimed to know everything about anything and usually know nothing about something.... please don`t take offense. There really is no point in bashing a band on their site.

This was my second official Umph show (WolfTrap,VA was 1st), but i do have tons of live shows that i listen too everyday. GDS obviously has no idea what he/she is talking about. Go listen to Ashlee Simpson or something. There should not be a comparison between bands. Exspecially bands from different eras. Each band has their own style and goodness. Listen to every band you can and enjoy what they have to offer. When it comes to choosing at an event like summerfest, go where it feels good. I do have to say that i bounced around and really enjoyed Keller Williams. His "Rappers Delight" was nice. Umph plays their heads off everytime and should be comended for giving us these great tunes.

You are not a fan of music if you are such a hardass on your position of who you like. Music is an exploration in spirit and soul, Bobby would even tell you that. Jerry lived by it. Ratdog and UM both do that. If everyone wants to compare the Gratefull Dead and Phish to all bands that are around now, you don`t get it.
Are we living in a world where everyone thinks their sh_t smells better than everyone else`s?
Don`t do this to any tunes. Just keep jammin`.
