Reviews for Grateful Dead: 5/17/1977 Memorial Coliseum, U of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL

After almost 40 years of listening to GD shows, this is still my favorite ‘77 (high praise) and contender for overall favorite. So much to love, including a killer Scarlet>Fire, Terrapin, and Playin>Drums>Wharf Rat>Playin. They come out and rip a Sugar Mags encore because they knew they slayed this night and something like a Johnny B Goode would not suffice! Essential show.

the PIB > Drums > Wharf Rat > PIB to close the second set is so tasty; it doesn’t get any better

Another INCREDIBLE May 77' show that has been overshadowed by 5/8 and 5/9. The beginning of Fire On the Mountain is monumental and angry. Whapp. WHAAAAP. WHAAAPPPP!! It makes me smile everytime I listen to it. This show is special because it features the slow, methodical, synchronized perfection that May 77' is famous for, but also has the ENERGY of a Fall 77' show. It's weird, but lovely

Absolutely superb version of Jack-A-Roe. Bob's playing on it is especially noteworthy.
