My buddy had a tape of the second set, I first heard it on New Year’s Eve 89, I was tripping and just enthralled with what I was hearing! It’s definitely a trippy second sat!! You have to love a Stephen> NFA > Stephen, and the Samson coming out of drums in the middle of slipknot is a fun surprise, and the way Garcia’s lead just picks up Slipknot and takes off again after Samson is exquisite!

To emphasize how good this show is: This is maybe one of the only necessary performances of "Tennessee Jed" you'll ever need to hear. The guitar-solo is amazingly un-self indulgent and focused, calling attention to itself with its springloaded logic. A truly remarkable show, where even the songs you think you're tired of are heard anew, because the band is so enthusiastic.

Contrary to what the below review said, DO NOT go straight to Help On The Way. Instead, listen to 10/9/76 from start to finish, because it is one of the Dead's rare unimpeachable shows. The first set is *lighting* hot, with laser-focused versions of Deal and Looks Like Rain, ending in a majestic Sugaree. But set two is played under time pressure - the Dead shared a bill with The Who - and so it's unusually focused for '76: an hour of pure dynamite. Their best show of the year, perhaps.
