Chef’s kiss SQ and mix. A tightly restrained warm-up before unleashing one-offs in Boston, Ithaca, and Buffalo. Per N. Meriwether’s really well written vinyl box notes: Sugaree - “Phil and Jerry coiling beautifully. Keith’s piano weaving a version defined by nuance and poignancy.” Mama Tried, El Paso - “Billy and Mickey deconstruct the rhythm. Phil adds the flourishes.” TMNS - “chugs and builds…into unrestrained powerhouse.” 2nd set Bertha - “Lovely Keith work…counter to Garcia and Lesh…the whole band is tight, relaxed but laser focused…leading towards a fine Estimated, Scarlet>Fire…” Onto a “quick and peppy” Good Lovin retreating to a “serene and contemplative” St Stephen. Sugar Magnolia “moves carefully, deliberately…the same mode and mood…the prelude channel[ed] so effectively in 3 days [Buffalo]…vocals strong, Lesh relentless, guitars and keys pounding, cascading into a crashing finale…that propels the JBG encore out the gate.” (For a chuckle, start w track 2 and finish w track 1 - Bobby’s intro banter, “We’re all here asking that age old question, why doesn’t it ever work?” Such a satisfying show. God bless the Grateful Dead.)

Great show! Have loved Charlie Miller's transfer of this one for a long time. One of the first shows I ever listened to and my all time favorite Peggy O still (Beautiful solos! Whole band is truly together on this one). Possibly my favorite Sugaree as well.
