Reviews for Grateful Dead: 5/21/1977 Lakeland Civic Center, Lakeland, FL

Cornell Is Pure NPC Hype, Nothing More!  (7/26/2026 4:26:01 AM)

This week in GD history is perhaps the most crisp and well rehearsed for sure. As big steve recalled, the dead were in the studio more that year than any other, preparing for the spring tour for months and it paid off big time! It is the absolute pinnacle of the Live GD experience imho, Jimmy Carter was president, free and rampant drug use was unchecked and not regulated nor the prohibition of drugs was strictly enforced like the Nixon/Ford/Reagan/Bush terms. People had a blast on this tour, a total “Garcia Destroys America” moment in time for these 30 or so shows. The performances starting in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to Baltimore, Maryland were 12/10 from the Russian Judges type of absolute gold. The “analog” versions of Terrapin and the chunky Horace Silver like chords that Godchaux followed Garcia’s solos during the opening of the standard “Eyes of the World” would never again be reproduced or played better than this. Absolute perfection, gold.

Probably my favorite Comes a time. It's an absolute masterpiece. Amazing slow song executed on all levels with perfect vocals from jerry and Donna in sync. Thank you boys Rest easily to Jerry, Bobby, Phil, Keith, Donna, Brent & Vince. ??
