Both 1977 & 1978 were IMHO very strong years. This show was especially kicking. First set Bird Song is all there then some. The whole 2nd set cooked. Especially Samson. Band took a ten minute break B4 He’s Gone. The whole He’s Gone > NFA > Truckin’ was energy personified. Encore Terrapin also stands out. As for the largest Dead show, Watkins Glen had over a half a million more people. Show quality is a subjective judgement. To each his or her own. For my tastes, post 1975 this show is way up there.

This was a big event - the Dead's largest crowd ever up to that point, at 100,000+ attendees. Unfortunately - and there's no getting around this - it's a rather poor show. Incredibly boring setlist (they kept it square for the big crowd), tons of errors and experiments that don't work (He's Gone is an atrocity, butchered at double time for some reason), and a general sense of pointlessness. Only the lengthy Not Fade Away will move you at all. The beginning of a long down era for the band.

The not fade away is just 20 minutes of amazingness. Samson is on Fuego. Show is just amazing. One of the times they slaughtered the big gig pressure and leveled up????

My first show. I went alone to this show as I loved Marshall Tucker. Stood at the chain link fence right at the front edge of the stage. When Marshal Tucker was done i stayed in my spot at front of stage until the Dead came on. I was right in front of Jerry. I had seen up to this point a lot of bands at Nassau Coliseum and MSG. They played their latest album start to finish, which was standard for that time. So when Jerry started the beginning of Eyes i immediately realized that this band was different. He was soloing at the beginning of the song which I had never seen any band do before. Then Jerry started playing chords during his solos. Eyes made me a dead head for life. The NFA and Terrapin encore sealed the deal. Living near Nassau Coliseum allowed me to see a lot of Dead shows over the years. Englishtown changed my life!!!!!
