Say what you will about Keith’s playing in ‘78, but look no further than this PITB to know what he could bring on a good night. There’s a reason Dick picked this show.

In truth, I've never loved the Dead in 1978. I agree w/most fans that started to peter out a bit (along with Keith) for a whole number of reasons. But this show - really this set of shows, released as Dicks Picks 18 - is clearly as good as it gets. The Madison selection revolves around the 2nd set jam, which begins predictably (Estimated > Eyes) and then gets VERY lyrical with PITB > Wheel > PITB. In an era where the band could get repetitive at times, they're on fire tonight.

The “Music Never Stopped” from this show is particularly awe-inspiring. The 6/8 section of the jam builds to a crescendo, and the pivot back to the main groove of the song after never fails to knock my socks off. Explosive ending too. Everyone sounds great on here… even Keith, who’s playing had become a little lethargic by 1978, seems to be active and dialed. Great contributions from Donna as well. I’ve heard the whole DP release, and it’s all great (Eyes of the World is another standout from this run of shows) but the Music Never Stopped… something else. Maybe the Dead recording I have listened to most in my life.
