My incurious mind nearly dismissed this band—I had read "shred" as metal-inspired, highly virtuosic technical rock music.
This was far from the truth. They do indeed possess a few truly stunning musicians within their ranks, but most importantly for my aesthetic sensibilities... this is a band that listens and collaborates to elevate the Grateful Dead songbook, then extends it into uncharted territories. It becomes clear they bring themselves wholly to the music, and as a result, it feels alive and growing—an authentic expression of the humans gracing the stage.
The addition of Mikaela Davis this tour adds another luminous layer. To glimpse the full magnitude of their artistry in its complete force, I recommend "Bird Song" here—a transcendent musical expression the Grateful Dead could never have achieved, and I mean that in the best way possible.
P.S. If you enjoy, also check out Circles Around the Sun - with a lot of the same membership for similar talent but a different songbook.
