Reviews for Spafford: 6/20/2024 New Realm Brewing Co., Virginia Beach, VA

Opening jam is slightly more interesting than most.  Didn't see the segue into Lovesick coming.  Really dig the Cory/Mike interplay in this version of Soil. Diesel Driver is the 1st set highlight for me.  Dark and (briefly) menacing towards the end before an abbreviated segue into Vape. Worth noting:  One benefit of having Mike (and the subsequent tighter song rotation) is we're witnessing the development and refinement of newer shorter tunes like Can't Find My Vape, Machine Elves, Sham Time, and even veteran tunes like Shake You Loose. It's a Bunch dives into exploratory territory immediately after the composed section.  At first it's light and funky, then veers towards darkness.  It's around 11-12 minutes Cory and Jordan lead them into a key change and Mike is quickly on board.  Cory initiated this with a move to the piano; he initiates another change around 13 minutes by hoping off the piano - Mike hops on first, followed by Nick, and lastly Jordan.  The end result is a jam that ends up being the musical highlight of the evening. Bee Jam is noteworthy for the slick segue into Memphis.  They're doing their best to keep the setlists and music as compelling as possible despite the limitations. LTLO is another good example - even though it's getting played every other night, the jams are unique and actually GOOD.  This version is no exception - it rips!
