The first of two shows on the second night of King Crimson’s run at The Savoy. Want to hear a smoking version of Discipline? Check this one out. Whereas the previous evening’s audience recording of the track was incomplete, there’s no such outage on tonight. Astonishingly confident, buoyed no doubt by the reaction from a tremendously supportive crowd, it also swings like the clappers. “The King Crimson album previous to one you might find in your record store” says Belew “contained this little song called Red”. No sooner have the words left his lips and the place erupts into a frenzy. Elsewhere, Belew is clearly having a hell of time. His exuberant interventions on Frame By Frame act as an accelerant to an already volatile and smoking rendition, and you can picture his beaming smile as he wrangles all those hoots and hollers during Elephant Talk. An otherwise intact and devastatingly good Neil And Jack And Me, with a variant interlocking section, is robbed of its very ending as the tape cuts short.
