“Hello! Still there?” says a breathless Adrian Belew after a stomping rendition of Red. He needn’t have worried - the punters are hanging on King Crimson’s every note. Discipline, Thela and the aforementioned track are all pretty amped up, designed to drive through whatever atmosphere had been building up beforehand and drag it off in a new direction. While that’s all part of the dynamics of a rock show it’s also not sustainable for an entire concert. That’s where Matte Kudasai comes in; taking things down a notch, providing a breather and refreshing the palate. The version tonight is especially good, a veritable oasis of calm in an otherwise turbulent surround. A pity then that a latecomer wondering where his seat might be breaks the reverie which even this audience recording had managed to hint at. We hope the wandering audient had managed to park his butt by the time the band start raising the levels once again via a slow-burning performance of The Sheltering Sky. Keep an ear open for a rather savage rendition of Neil And Jack And Me; either by accident or design, there’s quite a few liberties being taken with the structure by a roving Bruford that make for interesting listening. The extended coda is a wonderful example of band having to think on its feet in the heat of the in-concert crucible.
