For the second of their eight concerts in Germany on this tour, the team take a couple of liberties with the standard KC set. Principally this involves The Talking Drum exploding into Thela rather than the usual LTA2. Does it work? Well, expectation is prison (as somebody once said) and Belew's soloing in the track is extraordinarily out there even by his note-bending standards.
Followed as it is by a hurtling, churning version of Neurotica, Red, by comparison, sounds almost laid back.
Thrak's skittering brush-work whispers conspiratorially between rising strings, torrents of competing discordant piano, and waves of scorching bowed bass. The spell is broken when Mastelotto's thundering drums push the band into a few seconds of a bruising avant-rock punch-out.
A particularly powerful LTIA2, Vrooom and Coda, make for an especially convincing conclusion to the show with Belew shining brightly throughout.
